General: The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies (IMMS), a private, non-profit corporation located in Gulfport, Mississippi, is seeking to immediately fill several research positions. These positions are part of a substantial interdisciplinary collaborative effort with other universities and scientists to study marine mammals both in the wild and in a controlled setting. The scope of research projects is vast, including such fields as acoustics, genetics, population dynamics, ecology, behavior, physiology and biomedical studies. All positions will be for a period of two years with the possibility of continued employment depending on performance and funding availability. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
Position: Research Scientist – Population Biologist/Ecologist
Responsibilities: Coordinate research activities between IMMS and collaborating scientists, participate in these research projects and document research progress; develop and conduct new research projects in population biology and ecology appropriate to the mission of IMMS and secure funding for such projects; oversee and track equipment usage, write reports for submission to state and federal agencies, and assist in writing and preparing grant proposals for funding. Candidate will be expected to conduct research studies and publish.
Qualifications: Requires a Ph.D. in biology, marine biology, zoology, ecology, or marine science from an accredited university with experience in population dynamics and ecology. Candidate must have proven ability in publishing, report writing, organizing and conducting research projects, and in securing funding. Boat handling experience and experience in dolphin research, husbandry, or training a plus. Eligible candidates should also be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
